The large festival theatre was built on plans of the Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister and opened by Herbert von Karajan in 1960. The facade of the baroque stable, designed by von Fischer von Erlach, was kept. Echoes of past use also remain in the foyer. The theatre has 2177 seating places with a magnificent view. It is used for opera performances and large concerts. The concert mussel was designed by the stage builder Richard Peduzzi. The portal of the main stage can be changed to between 14 and 30 meters.

The small festival theatre, with 1324 seating and 60 standing places, is not that small. It was first provisory set up in 1924 and changed many times – the last time in 1963 by the architects Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels. The entrance hall is adorned with a famous fresco of Anton Faistauer from the year 1926.

The Felsenreitschule was built over 300 years ago as a training of the archbishop’s cavalry. A 700sqm large fresco depicting cavalry skill, known as the "Türkenstechen" is located in the foyer. The Salzburg festivals moved here in 1926. This open-air theatre is suitable primly for operas and concerts as well as for theatrical shows. It has 1549 seating places.
