Built in 1077 by the sovereign Gebhard I. von Helffenstein in the course of the Investiture Controversy between the German Emperor Heinrich IV and Pope Gregor.

The Archbishop Gebhard was forced into exile in 1085 and his castle projects where completely ended by his successor. It is nowadays Europe’s largest fortress complex with more than 14,000 sq. m. building site.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is owned by the country; however it is administered by the state of Salzburg since 1953. Numerous events vivify the fortress all year round, as well as the romantic inner ward and the bastions.
