Toy Museum Salzburg

Toy Museum / Musical Instruments

The Salzburg Toy Museum (Folk Collection) in the Bürgerspital (picture below) was founded in 1978 and houses Austria’s largest collection regarding the history of European toys since the last 250 years.

All toy types are represented here and are shown on 800m2 of rooms with the Bürgerspital, around one of the most beautiful Renaissance court yards in Salzburg: Puppet houses and puppets, paper theatre, sheet metal and wooden toys from all known manufacturer areas, plush toys (mostly teddy bears), optical toys, tin figures, railways, toys from outside Europe, and much more. Special exhibitions and alternating presentations from the own inventory enhance the comprehensive offering.

Furthermore, there are regular children programmes, whereby toys from different materials can be built. The puppet show with Aunt Annette is quite popular (every Tuesday and Wednesday at 3pm).

The Toy Shop has a wide assortment available for any budget.

The Bürgerspital has a display of the most beautiful specimens from its comprehensive and historical musical instruments collection ranging 4 centuries.

Amongst the numerous keyboard, wind, string, plucked and percussion instruments, a pianoforte on which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself played and a clavichord once owned by his sister “Nannerl” are located here.

Audio examples bring the instruments to life and are a proof of the high quality of the objects exhibited.
